Ford Uses SYNC to Help People Take Control of Their Health

Ford's groundbreaking SYNC technology continues to impress drivers and critics with its constantly evolving software. The latest addition to its advanced features is aimed at a bit of a different market: chronic disease management. We know it seems strange for an automaker to take such a stance for health, but we really think they're on to something here.

The Blue Oval took the podium at the "Health and Wellness Connectivity Services on the Go" panel discussion at the Wireless Health 2011 Conference last month. They announced a new feature of their software that is aimed at managed chronic diseases and disorders like diabetes, asthma and allergies. The health and wellness services available with SYNC will allow customers to access a variety of voice-activated, health-oriented smartphone apps.

According to Paul Mascarenas, CTO and VP, Ford Research and Innovation, this step isn't really as far-fetched as it might initially sound. He says, "Ford SYNC is well known in the industry and with consumers as a successful in-car infotainment system, but we want to broaden the paradigm, transforming SYNC into a tool that can help improve people's lives as well as the driving experience."1

Of course, Ford is an automaker, they couldn't have developed these life-saving technologies without the help of a company like Well.doc. They are a major player in the emerging field of mHealth integrated services. Currently they've teamed up to create the software that is focused on diabetes, asthma and/or allergies, but there is future potential for the two companies to develop software to help people manage their health and wellness in a large variety of ways. In other words, this is just the beginning.
