When Ford went about redesigning the popular Fusion, we had no idea what they had in store for us. This is like a completely new car, from its headlights to its trunk lid, complete with a more fuel-efficient powertrain and the latest in in-vehicle connectivity and technology. We did know that whatever the automaker was working on, it was going to be big, and we were definitely not disappointed when they pulled the sheets back on the 2013 Ford Fusion.
There's a chance that if you were to catch a glimpse of this car on the street, you wouldn't know it's a Fusion. The automaker explains the their approach to design was really about building "More than a new car model." Rather, the new Fusion is, "A new model for cars."1
Samantha Hoyt, Marketing Manager for the Fusion says, "Our goals were actually to deliver something entirely different to the customer. We wanted to give them something they're proud to own. We wanted to give them great fuel economy, lots of choice, great design and style, but also the typical Ford dependable reliability all in a stylish package."2 All you need to do is take one look at the new Fusion to know that they have, in fact, accomplished just this.
At the heart of this car, obviously, is its powertrain. Drivers will get to choose between a 2.5-liter I4, a 1.6-liter Ecoboost turbo four, or a 2.0-liter EcoBoost. Power ratings for these engines, respectively, are 170-hp/170 lb-ft of torque; 179-hp/172 lb-ft of torque; and 237-hp/250 lb-ft of torque. But, Hoyt explains, this could just be the beginning. Without citing anything specific, she explains that the new Fusion is also a car that provides an excellent platform for building a performance model.
Could a Fusion SHO (like the Taurus SHO), be in the works? Only time will tell! Until then we'll just have to enjoy the gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid versions of the Fusion. As far as we're concerned, they all sound excellent (for now, anyway).
