When it comes to utility vehicles, Ford has no shortage of available options ranging from the EcoSport, Escape, the midsize Edge, all the way to the full-size Expedition. Now, a brand new Explorer is coming out soon.

The 2018 Explorer is an upgraded model that has many new features, including a new, sleek exterior, more technology options, and more options.

The new Explorer has a built-in 4G modem so that you can have a Wi-Fi hotspot on all your long car trips. This network can support up to 10 devices at one, up to 50 feet away from the car.

In other technology, the car has SYNC Connect, which means car owners can use FordPass to remotely control their car, lock and unlock the vehicle, and even access more intricate diagnostic data.

Some other new features include a new, enhanced active parking assistant, which can help drivers to parallel park by using numerous sensors and power-assisted steering to slip perfectly into even the tightest of spots. When you need to pull out of that spot, you can use park-out assist, which helps drivers to pull out of these parallel parking positions. A smart all-wheel-drive system with Terrain Management can improve control by managing how much power goes to each wheel.

When choosing an engine, buyers have three different options. The first, a 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost with 280 horsepower at 5,500 rpm, boasts 310 lb-ft of torque. The Sport and Platinum models feature an enhanced 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V6 engine with brand new quad exhaust tips. This powerful engine can generate 365 horsepower at 5,500 rpm while still managing 350 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm.

Furthermore, the newest Explorer model allows customers to choose many different features they might find useful with its new Safe and Smart packages, which are bundled features that help to assist drivers in everyday use.


The Ford Explorer has gone through a reinvention. Instead of the rugged utility vehicle of the past, the Explorer has grown into a family vehicle that can still get down and dirty like the Explorers that came before. This SUV has multiple options to choose from, but they are all 6-speed automatic with an independent suspension. Depending on your needs, you can choose between front- or all-wheel drive.

Engine Options

Although the old Explorer provided a V8 engine, the newer models most common engine is a 3.5-liter V-6 rated at 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. If you need your engine to do even more, the top of the line engine for the Explorer is a twin-turbo 3.5 liter V-6. This engine is rated at 365 hp and 350 lb-ft and always comes with all-wheel drive. The 4,980-pound Platinum SUV holds the beefiest and quickest Explorer engine since this generation debuted in 2011. The Platinum’s 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 EcoBoost engine is similar to its aggressive cousin, the Explorer Sport. Both SUVs have 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, a six-speed automatic transmission, and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. However, where the two really depart is that the Sport is not all-wheel drive. Instead, it has an option where you can purchase a set of 20-inch Continental summer tires. The Platinum’s luxury-themed 20-inch wheels are paired with all-season Hankook tires.

Six-Speed SelectShift Automatic Transmission

The Explorer comes standard with a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. If you upgrade to either the Explorer Sport or Platinum, there are steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, so you can manually change gears easily and quickly.

Suspension and Traction

The most prevalent feature in the Explorer is the multi-traction drive system that is flexible no matter the conditions you face. From normal to mud, to sand and snow, this vehicle can tailor the power that goes to the wheels and brakes to suit any condition you find yourself in. This vehicle really shines and provides extra relief for the majority of everyday drivers who need brake and engine modulation on things like hills. However, this vehicle is not the perfect fit for the smaller percentage of people who need little slip in the system.

For traction, the Explorer can tow up to 5,000 pounds, and its all-wheel drive doesn’t have a low gear ratio. It can drive through all seasons and get you where you need to go unless that place requires a terrain map and a guide. Every Explorer comes equipped with struts, and the Sports model has quick steering and tighter suspensions settings. It also has more bracing and a thicker stabilizer bar to provide a smooth ride.

The Trims

Explorer, XLT, Limited, Sport, and Platinum are the five trims offered by the 2018 Ford Explorer.

Starting at just under $32,000, the Explorer trim comes standard with automatic headlights with LED low beams, LED tail lights, heated power side mirrors, manual single-zone temperature control, four 12V power points, daytime running lights, power windows/door locks, and a rearview camera with a built-in washer.

The Explorer XLT includes all of the standards of the base trim as well as additional features. These features include a perimeter alarm, roof rack rails, leather-wrapped steering wheel, LED signature lighting, a push-button start, and keyless entry keypad. There’s also a reverse sensing system that alerts drivers when they get too close to an object. The XLT starts at around $34,000.

Customers that choose the Limited will be treated with add-ons which include ambient lighting, power folding outside mirrors, hands-free liftgate, a 110V power outlet, remote starting, LED fog lights, and a universal garage door opener. There’s also the forward sensing system which operates much like the reverse sensing system.

With a starting price of around $46,000, the Explorer Sport trim adds even more to the Limited feature set. Not only does it feature a 365-hp V6 EcoBoost engine, the Sport also has quad chrome exhaust tips, a sport-tuned front and rear suspension and heated seats. There’s also the four-wheel drive with terrain management system and hill descent control.

Lastly, the Explorer Platinum trim (priced around $53,500) has standard features which include quad chrome exhaust tips, automatic high beams, a twin panel moonroof, and rain-sensing wipers. There’s also lane departure warning, collision warning, adaptive cruise control, park assist with pull out assist, and lane-keeping assist. Blind spot information system with cross traffic detection can be expected, as well. Platinum models also offer inflatable rear outboard safety belts.


No matter which trim suits your fancy, the new Safe and Smart Package is optional. The Safe and Smart Package includes adaptive cruise control, brake supported collision warning, blind spot information warning, cross-traffic alert, lane detection/lane keeping assistance, auto high beams, and rain sensing wipers.

A unique piece of technology called ‘Intelligent 4WD’ allows shifting without stopping between numerous terrain settings found on the Explorers.

Under The Hood

With Ford’s three engines that’s standard in the Explorer trims aren’t new, owners can expect a lot in terms of power, torque, and fuel economy.

The base Ti VCT Duratec V6 3.5 liter engine that comes standard on Explorer and XLT trims (optional on Limited trims) adds 290 horsepower. The engine also provides 17 mpg in cities and 24 mpg on highways.

With the 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline four-cylinder engine (standard on Limited; option for base Explorer and XLT models), owners can expect 19 mpg in cities and 27 mpg on highways. Despite offering 10 fewer horsepower than the 3.5-liter V6 base engine, the 2.3-liter EcoBoost provides much more in the way of torque. 310 lb-ft at 3,000 RPM makes the engine a much better choice for owners needing to carry/haul hefty loads.
