Performance, Exterior, and Features on the 2019 Ford Flex

The Ford Flex boasts the longest wheelbase in its class at a whopping 118 inches from axle to axle. The Flex’s curb weight is 4,500 pounds. While the Flex may be heavy, it has a lower center of gravity than crossover SUVs such as the Ford Explorer platform-mate. Combined with its accurate steering, the Flex handles well and isn’t a stranger to a curvy road.

Ford offers the standard 3.5-liter V6 producing 287 of horsepower with 254 pounds per foot of torque for the Flex and for more power there’s the Flex’s optional turbocharged engine producing a more robust 365 of horsepower with 350 pounds per foot of torque. The V6 is paired with a standard six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is an available option. With the turbocharged engine, the Flex also has a stout tow rating of 4,500 pounds.

The sleek, angular design and low ground clearance keep the Flex from looking like another boxy SUV. Side strakes stamped in the sheet metal help to avoid slab-sided chunkiness. There are three trim levels SE, SEL, and Limited. There is a variety of exterior color choices in a broad range. The gas tank holds 18.5 gallons. Average city mileage is 16 mpg and 23 mpg for highway driving.

Standard features for the SE trim include 60/40-split folding second-row seats with an auto-folding passenger side, 50/50-split folding third-row seats, a six-speaker audio system with a CD player and a USB port, 17-inch wheels, rear parking sensors, heated side mirrors, rear privacy glass, a keyless-entry keypad, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, six-way power driver’s seat (with manual recline), a rearview camera, Bluetooth, a 4.2-inch LCD screen, and voice controls.

The SEL trim adds 18-inch wheels, upgraded brakes, fog lights, keyless entry, keyless (push-button) ignition, remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear controls, wood-appearance interior trim, heated front seats, power-adjustable front seats, Sync 3 infotainment system including an eight-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, a USB port, and smartphone integration via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The SEL trim can be fitted with the 202A option package, which adds an upgraded seven-speaker audio system, a 110-volt household power outlet, leather upholstery (vinyl for the third row), driver-seat memory settings, power-adjustable pedals, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and a power liftgate.

The top of the line Limited trim package includes everything from the SE and SEL trim packages and adds 19-inch wheels, xenon headlights, LED taillights, power-folding mirrors, automatic wipers, additional metallic exterior trim, upgraded wood interior trim, ambient interior lighting; a navigation system, and a 12-speaker Sony premium audio system that includes HD radio.

The Limited trim is eligible for the 301A package that adds an automatic parallel parking system, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, heated and power-adjustable steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and power-folding third-row seats.

Additional options which are dependent on trim packages include 20-inch wheels, roof rails, tow package, panoramic sunroof, black exterior and interior trim, upgraded leather upholstery, and inflatable second-row outboard seat belts.

Interior and Comfort

With its low ground clearance, the Flex is easy to get into and out of. Up to seven passengers can ride comfortably with plenty of legroom, shoulder room, hip room, and headroom and there is generous cargo space as well. Rear headroom is 40.5 inches, the rear hip room is 55.0 inches, rear legroom is 44.3 inches, and rear shoulder room is 58.1 inches. Seating is the typical three-row SUV configuration. Convenience features include up to 10 cup holders and easy-folding rear seats to easily accommodate additional cargo.

Depending on the trim level selected, heated seats, automatic front cabin climate control, manual rear climate control, entertainment features (screens and speakers), power-fold seats, all contribute to a luxury experience in the Flex. Thanks to its reasonable ride height and large windows all around, all passengers get great views of the outside, making it the perfect ride for Sunday drives and/or road trips. Nice surface detailing gives the Flex’s interior a classier feel than many more recent Ford designs and the 8.0-inch touchscreen for infotainment on most models is well integrated.

The Flex has about 20 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, which is usually more than enough. With the third-row seats folded flat the cargo space increase to 43 cubic feet and that doubles to a maximum capacity of 80 cubic feet with the second row of seats folded down so the Flex is ready for a trip to stock up on just about anything.

The Flex’s infotainment system Sync 3 is significantly better than in other models and it boasts Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety rates the Ford Flex as ‘Good’ in side impact tests, roof strength tests, rear crash protection/head restraint tests, and small overlap front tests.

The Ford Flex comes with a standard three-year/36000-mile warranty.

The Flex’s large wagon design is a bit dated not having been fully redesigned since its 2009 debut but it is distinctive. The Flex is a great looking vehicle that will turn heads when you drive by. The entertainment and other technology features in the 2019 Ford Flex are cutting edge.

We find the seat comfort and quietness up to par with the rest of the Flex’s class. The Flex’s handling ability is outstanding especially if you opt for the turbocharged engine option. If you are in the market for safety and comfort for up to seven passengers with the ability to ably handle significant cargo then this is the ride for you.
